DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - A husband and wife are dead after an overnight shooting. The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. Friday.

DeKalb County Police said they believe a 34-year-old man shot his wife multiple times before turning the gun on himself around 2 a.m. Friday morning in their Stone Mountain Home on Shadow Lakes Drive.

Neighbors said the first signs of trouble early Friday morning at a Dekalb County home were after it was already too late.

"[A] lady [was] screaming for help. [I] wasn't really sure what was going on," said Daniel Adenuga.

Daniel Adenuga woke up to the cries just after 2 a.m. Friday morning on Shadowlakes Drive near Stone Mountain.

"Heard her scream a couple times, looking for help and [I] was out trying to figure out what was going on. She had run from one end to the other," said Adenuga.

Police were on scene within a minute or two in what they are now calling a murder suicide.

"Once our officer arrived he was directed inside the home by a family member here. He found a man deceased. That officer was then taken to a bedroom where a female was found suffering from multiple gunshot injuries. She was later pronounced dead on the scene," said Mekka Parish of DeKalb County Police.

Police said paramedics on scene worked to revive that 24-year-old woman. They said they suspect her 34-year-old husband shot and killed her then turned the gun on himself.

"At this point our detectives do believe prior to this shooting there was a domestic related incident," said Parish.

DeKalb police tell us there were 2 adults and 2 small children in the house. They're now talking to those adults to try to figure out exactly what happened overnight.

Police said they have been called here before for a domestic dispute. But that previous incident was not violent.

"I actually witnessed one incident where the cops did show up. They're a very nice couple but I figure they've had problems in the past," said Adenuga.

Police aren't releasing the names of the couple until they notify next of kin.

Friends said the whole family at just gotten together to celebrate the couple's youngest son's first birthday over the weekend.

WAUKEGAN, Ill. — Authorities are investigating the apparent murder-suicide of an elderly couple found at Fort Sheridan Cemetery in northern Illinois.

Lake County Forest Preserve Police Chief John Tannahill says officers responded to a report of shots fired around noon Thursday. They found a man and a woman shot and a vehicle parked nearby.

Tannahill says investigators believe the man shot the woman, then turned the gun on himself.

Lake County Coroner Richard Keller says both bodies had a single gunshot wound to the chest. The victims are not being identified because relatives have not been notified. No autopsies are planned.

Fort Sheridan Cemetery is located in a forest preserve that was once part of a U.S. Army base. The cemetery remains federal land.

SHIZUOKA--Police are investigating a possible murder-suicide after a man and three women were found dead at a house in Izunokuni, Shizuoka Prefecture, on Thursday morning.

The police suspect that Yuji Sugimura, a 58-year-old company employee, strangled his wife, 57, and two other women--believed to be the couple's daughters--before hanging himself.

According to Ohito Police Station, Sugimura, who lived with his wife and their two daughters, aged 26 and 22, was found hanging in the first floor living room when a colleague visited the house at about 8:45 a.m. on Thursday.

A woman's body also was found on the first floor, while the bodies of Sugimura's wife and another woman were discovered on the second floor after the police arrived.

All three women showed signs they had been strangled, the police said.

LEAGUE CITY — Police and relatives are puzzled over how a discussion about family finances led a League City man to shoot his father and stepmother before turning a .38-caliber pistol on himself.

Lewis Edward Cantrell III, 26, was having a discussion about his finances in the living room with his father, Lewis Edward Cantrell II, and his stepmother, Gayle Mardis Cantrell, shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday when shots rang out.

The younger Cantrell’s 18-year-old brother and his 30-year-old stepsister were in separate bedrooms next to the living room, League City police spokesman Sgt. John Jordan said.

The 18-year-old was asleep, but the stepsister was listening as her parents calmly discussed a financial strategy for their son.

Cantrell III did not live at home but didn’t have a steady job.

“They were kind of counseling him on how to better save money and handle his finances,” Jordan said. “They were just talking, not arguing about it.”

Cantrell III, who has no history of violence, shot his parents dead during the discussion, Jordan said. He walked outside, then returned to the living room and shot himself.

The shots woke his brother, who fled with his sister down a corridor to a door that led outside and bypassed the living room, Jordan said.

The siblings had no idea that their brother was on the verge of violence. “They were dumbfounded,” Jordan said.

“They didn’t indicate there had been any family problems,” he said.

One of the siblings called 911 at 7:50 p.m. and a police SWAT team arrived at the residence in the 2900 block of Chinaberry Park Lane. The SWAT team found the bodies in the living room.

Jordan said investigators were trying to determine how the younger Cantrell got the gun. He pointed out that it’s not necessary in Texas to have a permit to carry a gun in a car or keep it at home.

MARGARETTA TOWNSHIP, OH -- Detectives in Erie County have unraveled the mystery behind a burning body that was discovered Monday in a state wildlife preserve outside Sandusky.

An autopsy would reveal that the victim was a woman who has died from a blow to the head before her body was set on fire at the Resthaven Wildlife Area in Margaretta Township.

Witnesses then reported to the Erie County Sheriff's Department that 32-year-old Charlotte Evans and her boyfriend, 50-year-old Timothy Tyree, were often seen in the area where the body was found.

Sheriff's Department Captain Paul Sigsworth says, "We also did learn that there had been past incidents, witnessed incidents of domestic violence involving Mr. Tyree and Miss Evans and basically it appeared to be physical violence being perpetrated on her by him."

Once investigators were able to confirm the victim was Charlotte Evans, they began a manhunt for Timothy Tyree and learned that he had relatives in Kentucky.

They asked police in the Bluegrass State to keep an eye out for Tyree and Charlotte Evans' missing van.

Captain Sigsworth says, "He was in the van parked along the side of the road in Lechter County, he was immediately taken into custody by the authorities there."

Timothy Tyree has a long criminal history that includes a 1997 assault conviction for hitting a former roommate over the head with a baseball bat and a 2007 conviction for child enticement.

Erie County Prosecutor Kevin Baxter says Tyree "tried to entice a 12-year-old newspaper girl back to a garage, luckily it didn't get much farther than that."

An Erie County Grand Jury returned indictments Thursday against Tyree on charges that include murder, arson and abuse of a corpse.

If convicted of all charges, Timothy Tyree could face life in prison. Authorities are now seeking his extradition back to Northeast Ohio.

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A man who was accused of shooting and wounding his wife two months ago shot and killed her before killing himself on Monday.

Authorities say that Randal McCoy shot his estranged wife, Consuela, then killed himself.

Police say the incident happened outside the Harrison Estate apartment complex just before 6:00 p.m. on Monday.

McCoy was accused of wounding his wife in March.

He was released from jail on a $75,000 bond, and with the condition that he would have no further contact with her.

KOLKATA: A merchant navy technician killed his wife, father-in-law and then committed suicide by hanging himself at his posh flat in the port

area on Monday. In a suicide note written
in blood, Sujit Kundu held a distant relative and a neighbour responsible for the deaths.

Police suspect that Sujit (32), a resident of a posh Merlin River View flat at Kidderpore's Kabi-Tirtha, suspected his wife Pinki (26) of having an extra-marital affair, which drove him to commit the murders. They have detained neighbour Rosy Gomes and Sujit's distant brother-in-law, Raja, for interrogation.

According to investigating officers, Sujit, a fitter with a merchant navy company, usually stays away most of the year in the course of his duties. He returned home a couple of months ago. "He was last seen returning home on his motorcycle with his wife on the pillion on Friday evening," said their neighbour, S Warsi. Sujit was wearing jeans. When Sujit's body was found on Monday, he was still wearing the same pair of jeans.

Police suspect Sujit murdered Pinki and father-in-law Ajay Nath Pal (65) and killed himself on Friday itself. He first slashed their throats with a sharp-edged weapon before hanging himself from the ceiling fan in his bedroom. The bodies retrieved by the police were highly decomposed. The murder weapon, however, is yet to be traced.

Sujit had used blood to write the suicide note on the wall of his home. "Ei chhilo aamar hate sajano poribar. Bhangte dekhchhilam, tai jure dilam (I made this family with my own hands. Seeing it break apart, I am mending it)."

In the suicide note, he also reportedly said that he wanted to have a nice family. But Raja and Rosy did not let it happen. Sujit's elder brother Manas Kundu said there was no problem as such. "Why Sujit did it is a mystery to me," he said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Pinki was close to her distant cousin Raja, a student. Sujit suspected Pinki had an affair with him. This created a rift between them. Sujit also disliked her association with their neighbour Rosy Gomes and suspected that she used to instigate her to behave this way. Rosy, their neighbours said, is a "Westernised woman" who was friendly with Pinki.

Investigations revealed that the flat actually belonged to Ajay. Sujit's house is at Rabindranagar. After Ajay turned immobile because of an illness, Pinki started staying with him to take care of him. Sujit was also staying at the flat for some time.

Sujit's friend in Rabindranagar said he was a jovial person. On Friday, he visited the Rabindranagar house, where his mother lives. "He had a long chat and was in high spirits. We did not have any inkling that he could commit such a horrible act," said one of his friends.

EDMONTON -- A 49-year-old former Winnipeg man shot his wife and daughter and then himself in their home, an autopsy confirmed Thursday.

RCMP discovered the bodies of Kerry Saltel, his wife 47-year-old Gail and their 17-year-old daughter Erika inside the home in Grande Cache around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. They are not seeking any suspects beyond the three deceased.

The town's mayor called on its residents Thursday to pull together for the surviving daughter of the family.

Mayor Louise Krewusik knew the Saltel family through the couple's older daughter, who was in middle school when Krewusik was its principal.

"They were the good, kind, responsible citizens that every community is proud to have in their midst," Krewusik said. "We will come together and we will do whatever needs to be done in order to support those who remain behind."

Many in the town are confused and saddened by the discovery, Krewusik said.

"We will comfort one another and support one another and do whatever we can to make some sense of this tragedy."

The Saltels lived in Grande Cache for about 10 years, and ran Autumn Stone Music & Books in town. Kerry was terminally ill with colon cancer, and Gail had taken over most of the work of running the business.

"I'm quite sure that people are walking past that little shop and feeling that something is missing," the mayor said.

Neighbours described the Saltels as quiet and friendly.

Gina Goldie said the strain from Kerry's illness had visibly worn his wife down. Goldie said she last talked to Gail on Monday, when the women were cleaning their adjoining yards.

"She wasn't very happy," Goldie said.

Allyssa Lyon said she had been best friends with Erika for the past seven years, since the Saltels moved to Grande Cache.

"We just kind of suited each other," she said. "She was like my sister."

Lyon said Erika was always trying to make people happy.

Lyon said the two girls had plans to work for a year after their Grade 12 graduation this spring, then spend a year travelling to Spain and England.

Kerry and Gail Saltel both grew up in Winnipeg, and moved to Grande Cache for work after their children were born, said a friend from Landmark, Man.

Kerry was a train engineer for CN in Winnipeg and worked for another railway in Alberta.

With this one I wanted to give all accounts. First off, it was reported they had been dating for about a month, and that he accidentally shot her, ok that may be true....but if it were an accident why kill himself as well?

Another question this has brought up in my mind is WHY did the police have to wait for a search warrant AFTER they saw/found dead people? Maybe I watch too many cop shows (I LOVE The Closer, and Law & Order: SVU), but seems to me that when there are injured or DEAD people the cops are allowed to enter the premises to render aid or assistance as needed....how did they know there was no one else in there that may need help, if they waited a few hours after discovery to enter??

LEONARDTOWN, Md. (May 7, 2009) -- A woman and her two children may be alive today because she had the presence of mind to flee her home and seek safety after her husband allegedly violently assaulted both teenage children and then displayed a handgun saying, "I am going to make you famous, I don't have anything to lose."

The husband, Donnie Smith, Sr., 41, of Lexington Park was arrested after local police executed a search and seizure warrant at his residence Tuesday. Police say the handgun was recovered at that time.

Sheriff's office patrol deputies say they were alerted to the situation in the home on Monday.

According to police, Smith first assaulted his 13 year-old son, who wears leg braces, by pushing him down stairs several weeks ago. On Sunday Smith allegedly assaulted his 16 year-old daughter by punching her in the face several times and pointing a handgun at her. Police say Smith then showed his wife the handgun and said, "I am going to make you famous, I don't have anything to lose."

The woman told police she took her children and fled the following day, Monday, because of her husband's propensity for violence.

Detectives from the Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) picked up the investigation. The following day, Tuesday, detectives, with the assistance of the St. Mary's County Emergency Services Team (EST), executed the search and seizure warrant and made the arrest.

Smith was charged with First Degree Assault, 2 counts of Second Degree Assault, 2 counts of Child Abuse, and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. He was incarcerated in the St. Mary's County Detention Center.

Police identified the men as Nurali B. Bhimani, 28, and Nasruddin N. Dhanani, 42.

They said Dhanani died at the scene Monday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after shooting Bhimani.

The men were related but authorities would not say how, nor did they know what led to the shooting.

APPLETON — Scott E. Schmidt, charged with shooting his estranged wife to death last month, is trying to block the use of his jail medical records in efforts to determine his competency for trial.

Schmidt’s attorney, Gregory Petit, is asking for the return of medical records the Outagamie County District Attorney’s Office acquired through a subpoena.

The records are confidential under medical privacy laws unless Schmidt says otherwise, he argued in a motion filed last week.

"The patient has the right to refuse to disclose any physician-patient reports, and absent a release by the patient, no report should be given to any other parties,” Petit wrote.

Schmidt, 38, was charged with counts including first-degree intentional homicide after his April 17 arrest outside Kelly Wing Schmidt’s Grand Chute home.

Wing Schmidt, 39, was shot multiple times in the head and died several hours later at a Neenah hospital. Her mother, Barbara Wing, 66, was shot once and was treated at a hospital and released the same day.

Schmidt is scheduled to appear in court Friday for a hearing on his competency to stand trial.

Petit argued that the defense should have had an opportunity to oppose the subpoena seeking the jail medical records. The motion doesn’t describe what the reports contain.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Melinda Tempelis argued in a separate motion that the reports are vital to determine whether Schmidt is mentally capable of proceeding through a trial.

“The state believes these records should be provided to the doctor conducting the examination so that a complete and thorough evaluation and examination can be performed,” Tempelis wrote.

Less than 12 hours after they left the scene of an apparent domestic disturbance, members of the Ennis Police Department were called back to 611 Gilmer St. for another disturbance. This time officers discovered two bodies.

After forcing their way into the residence, officers found the bodies of Sharon Lusk, 28, and Willie James Lusk, also 28. Police have determined the incident was an apparent murder/suicide with Willie Lusk shooting his wife then turning the weapon on himself. Det. Sgt. Mike Hopson said the earlier call to the location did not involve violence and both parties walked away from the situation without further incident.

“Officers were called out to the Lusk residence shortly before noon because of a disturbance,” he said. “Both parties acknowledged that they were having a disagreement and had gotten a little loud but that neither of them had been assaulted. The couple agreed that they were both upset and needed some time away from each other. They left the scene separately and officers had no indication that anything further would occur.”

Inside the master bedroom where the shootings took place, officers found an infant in a crib and two minor children asleep in the next bedroom. All three girls were released to their maternal grandparents unharmed. Chief of Police John Erisman said the incident was extremely tragic and the first of it’s kind in his years with the department.

SAN DIEGO -- A couple found dead in their Miramar Ranch North home, possibly the victims of a murder-suicide, were identified Wednesday.

Richard Young Choe, 67, and his wife, Grace, 62, were found by friends who went to their home in the 11200 block of Golden Birch Way about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, because the two had not shown up at a church event, San Diego police Lt. Kevin Rooney said.

Along with a neighbor, the friends looked in the windows and saw the woman's body, Rooney said. Firefighters forced their way in and found the two bodies, he said.

Both the man and the woman had traumatic injuries," Rooney said.

A handgun was found near the man's body, Rooney said. The deaths were being investigated as a possible murder-suicide.

A 57-year-old woman involved in a bitter divorce was in "good condition" today as she recovered from a bullet wound inflicted in a West Hollywood parking structure by her husband, who then killed himself, authorities said.

"She's in good condition, and may be released sometime today or tomorrow," Sgt. John Corina of the sheriff's homicide bureau said this morning.

The woman's name was not immediately released. Her husband was Eric Steven Lesin, 59, of North Hollywood, a coroner's investigator said.

Lesin waited for his wife in an underground parking structure in the 9000 block of Phyllis Avenue Wednesday morning, said sheriff's Lt. David Coleman. At some point during their encounter, Lesin shot the woman in the neck, then turned the gun on himself, he said.

Paramedics were sent to the location about 9 a.m. Wednesday. Lesin was declared dead at the scene while his wife was transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in critical condition.

Coleman said the pair were going through a bitter divorce, and Corina added: "He felt that she was to blame for his troubles."

Corina said Lesin and his wife had no children together.

WEST HOLLYWOOD - A woman has been hospitalized in critical condition in an apparent murder suicide attempt, authorities said.

The shooting was reported shortly after 9 a.m. near the intersection of Doheny Drive and Santa Monica Boulevard, said Sgt. Diane Hecht of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

The unidentified woman is said to be roughly 50-years-old and was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in critical condition, county fire Inspector Steve Zermeno said.

The man, who was in his late 50s, died at the scene.

Investigators believe he shot the woman, said to be his wife, before turning the gun on himself.

ORANGE, Calif. (AP) — An electrical contractor who was having financial problems shot to death his live-in girlfriend and 3 1/2-year-old son before killing himself, police said Wednesday.

Officers called to an apartment Tuesday afternoon found the bodies of Craig Rubin, 44, and Mary Striley, 42, on beds in separate bedrooms while the body of their son, Jake, was in a high chair in the kitchen, Sgt. Dan Adams said.

Each had been shot once in the head.

Police were called by the apartment manager, who had not seen the family in several days. The manager said the couple had not moved their cars or answered their phone for days, police said.

Adams said Rubin left a suicide note in which he took responsibility for killing his family.

The motive for the killings was under investigation, but Rubin had financial problems and both his girlfriend and son had health problems, Adams said. He had no details about those problems.

A work van labeled Rubin Electric was parked outside the apartment.

Rubin and Striley had lived together for four or five years, Adams said.

LAKELAND, Fla. - His father and stepmother had fought before, and 13-year-old Nathan Bellar had no reason to believe their latest exchange would turn violent.

After an argument on Sunday, though, the teen watched his father gun down the woman as she tried to take her sons to their grandparents'. Nathan ran back through the house and heard his father shoot his younger brothers, but the gunfire wasn't over.

His father chased him through the cluttered garage and took aim, but tripped on a bicycle before he could get off another fatal shot. As Nathan ran screaming to the safety of a neighbor's house, the father killed himself in the front lawn.

The teen was staying with his grandparents Monday, a day after investigators said Troy Ryan Bellar, 34, shot and killed his wife, Wendy Bellar, 31, and their 5-month-old and 8-year-old sons. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said the surviving teen was quiet and cried some after the shootings but also helped detectives piece together the deadly sequence of events.

"His entire family is gone," Judd said.

"What he witnessed, what he was engaged in, most people in this world will never witness," the sheriff later added.

Wendy Bellar was carrying 5-month-old Zack James Bellar out the front door in a car seat when Nathan Bellar saw his father follow them with a 7.62 mm rifle, Judd said. She intended to take the infant and her 8-year-old son, Ryan Patrick Bellar, to her in-laws for the night but was shot down on the screen porch.

Nathan told deputies the earlier argument gave no indication that the evening would turn violent. Investigators said they had not found any suicide note, and a motive remained unclear for the killings in Lakeland, between Tampa and Orlando.

"They argued a little bit, but nothing significant," Judd said.

It wasn't the first argument for the couple who'd been married for 10 years. According to an arrest affidavit, Troy Bellar accused his wife of hitting, punching and scratching him in March. Wendy Bellar was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery, and the case was pending.

Sunday night's gunfire sent panicked neighbors to their phones to dial 911. One of them told an emergency dispatcher she saw the teen "running around in the garage with his hands up, and like screaming," according to a recording of the call.

After Nathan safely reached the home of another neighbor, that woman relayed information from him to a 911 dispatcher.

"A boy's here at my house that lives there and says that his dad shot his mom and there's a baby there," the neighbor, who was not identified, told a 911 operator.

"I know this is going to be very hard for you to ask him," the operator said. "Is his mom still alive?"

After an exchange between the neighbor and the boy, the woman told the operator: "She got shot in the head."

Deputies arrived at a horrific scene: Wendy Bellar and her two young sons dead from gunshot wounds in their screened-in porch and their father lifeless in the front yard. A preliminary investigation indicates that more than 10 rounds were fired in all.

"It left veteran detectives and crime scene technicians that do this for a living stunned last night," Judd said.

Detectives praised the surviving teen for being helpful.

"He cried some, as you can imagine," Judd said. "As he should have done. And he was very quiet. And we were very delicate with him."

Investigators say Troy Bellar ran a home remodeling and handyman business, which next-door neighbor Doug Lane said seemed to do a steady business despite the economic downturn.

"He said the remodeling had dropped off, but he was doing repair work for commercial apartments and that sort of thing," Lane said. "He said that he was staying busy."

Judd couldn't say if the family was experiencing any financial difficulties.

Records show the husband had been arrested twice in the county, on suspicion of armed robbery and aggravated battery in 1994 and for driving under the influence in 1999. He was convicted of petit/retail theft in the first case and of driving under the influence in the second.

But if the couple argued before, Lane said he never heard them. He said he saw them sitting outside together Sunday evening, giving no indication that anything was wrong.

"Troy and Wendy were good, good neighbors," Lane said. "Fortunate to know them. Just an awful shock."

DADE CITY — The Scotts' marriage had been strained for some time, according to friends and family members. But in the month leading up to Terry Wayne Scott's decision to kill his wife and then himself, authorities say, things unraveled quickly.

In early April, Veronica Scott discovered her husband of 10 years was cheating on her.

A few weeks later, Zephyrhills police showed up at the couple's 2-acre pasture on Mount Vernon Road to investigate whether Terry Wayne Scott was stealing items from his job at Advance Auto Parts and selling the goods on eBay.

His wife cooperated with investigators, and Terry Wayne Scott, 59, was charged April 17 with grand theft — his first arrest.

Five days later, Veronica Scott, 48, filed for divorce.

Veronica Scott's relatives say years of emotional abuse and the discovery of her husband's infidelity led her to file for divorce. They say she feared her husband, who often isolated himself and avoided his wife's family gatherings.

But they say they never expected him to kill her.

"She'd been unhappy for a long, long time," said Cindy Barthle, 46, Veronica's sister. "Part of what made him crack is that he's a control freak, and she never stood up to him."

Pasco County Sheriff's deputies came to the couple's home Saturday night after co-workers were concerned that Veronica Scott missed her shift at Pasco Regional Medical Center, where she was an administrative supervisor.

They found husband and wife in the garage, both dead of gunshot wounds.

On April 17, Zephyrhills police met Veronica Scott at the couple's home. The manager at the auto parts store where Terry Wayne Scott worked had reported a "huge inventory loss" at the store.

Inside the garage of the Scotts' home, the report said, police found a blue cooler filled with new auto parts from the store, including a fuel pump, a propane tank and packs of batteries.

Terry Wayne Scott also stored items in Veronica Scott's 2008 Toyota Tacoma truck, the report said, and used her name as the sender of the items, which he sold on eBay.

A few months earlier, his son told police, he asked Terry Wayne Scott where all the auto parts came from.

"Five-finger discount," was the reply.

Veronica Scott was born in San Francisco and grew up in Dade City. She was the oldest of five children. Her family runs Roberts Vault Company in Dade City.

Terry Wayne Scott was her fourth husband.

Veronica Scott had two sons. One, a teenager, was adopted by Terry Wayne Scott, and lived with the couple.

Terry Wayne Scott had been married once before, and had an adult son and a teen daughter.

Veronica Scott's mother, Donna Roberts, said her daughter loved horses and owned four.

She said her daughter loved her job at the Dade City hospital, where she was awarded a Nurse of the Year honor in 2003. She was chosen from a pool of 90 nurses.

Donna Roberts said her daughter had grown to fear her husband.

"It's unbelievable, but knowing him, we were expecting him to do something bad," she said. "She said he wouldn't hurt her, but we thought he was violent."

Amanda Martin, assistant chief nursing officer at the hospital, had worked with Veronica Scott since 1996.

"She was a great friend and confidante that you could talk to," she said. "I can't say in words how much she'll be a loss to our facility."

Martin said she knew of her co-worker's troubles with Terry Wayne Scott.

"He put her through a lot for a long time," she said. "She would tell stories of how she wanted out. He was very verbally abusive."

Ronnie Bearden, 51, Veronica Scott's ex-husband and father of her oldest son, said his ex-wife enjoyed outdoor activities like camping and fishing.

"She liked to go to the firing range with me," said the retired sheriff's deputy, who lives in Georgia. "She could shoot a gun as good as I could."

The two split amicably in the early '80s, and Veronica Scott moved to Florida. Their son stayed with Bearden in Georgia.

Once, Bearden said, their son was hospitalized in an ICU after a bad car accident. Veronica and Terry Wayne Scott stopped by the hospital, Bearden said.

"He didn't want her to stay (at the hospital) at all," Bearden said. "She said she was scared of him. Every time they got into an argument, he said she wasn't leaving him."

Veronica Scott's brother, Steve Roberts, 41, said his sister's husband didn't want her around her family, and avoided family gatherings.

He said Terry Wayne Scott should have dealt with his problems instead of taking his life and his wife's.

"Instead of facing what he had coming to him," Steve said, "he took the cowardly way out."

Last month, Veronica Scott discovered her husband was cheating after she found love letters to other women, Steve Roberts said.

She talked to her attorney and officials at the Pasco County Sheriff's Office about filing a restraining order, said her sister, Cindy Barthle, but records show one was never filed.

On Monday, Barthle thought about an upcoming trip out-of-state that Veronica Scott planned to take with her mom and sister.

Now, says Barthle, "it just feels like a nightmare."

Shreveport police responded to the 8900 block of Brandon Drive in Shreveport after receiving a welfare call. Police say a relative of the victim called concerned that their family member did not show up to work. When police arrived at the victim's home three bodies were found inside.

Investigators believe 36-year-old Billy Hardy shot and killed his wife, 33-year-old Jolyne Hardy and their 3-year-old son before turning the gun on himself.

Billy Hardy's bestfriend says he doesn't believe Hardy pulled the trigger, stating he loved his family too much.

Other neighbors tell KTAL they wished the gunman, whomever it was, would have sought help before making such a tragic decision.

The couple both worked for the Willis Knighton system. KTAL was told they had been married for five years.

LENOIR - Police are investigating a murder-suicide of a husband and wife after a neighbor found a note on an apartment door that said to call 911.

Robin and Larry Jarvis were married in 1986, said Capt. Sid Pope with the Lenoir Police Department.

The couple was found dead in Larry Jarvis' apartment at the Meadowood Garden Apartment complex on Meadowood Drive at 9:10 a.m. Sunday. Both were dead from gunshot wounds, though police are waiting for autopsy results to confirm how they died, Pope said.

Pope said the couple separated in February, and the murder-suicide happened in Larry's apartment. Robin lived on Catawba River Road in Old Fort.

"They were together earlier in the day and it was all consensual," Pope said.

Police are investigating what happened that led to the murder-suicide. Pope said Larry left a note.

"It looks like he claimed responsibility for what happened through a note," Pope said.

And although Larry and Robin were found inside Larry's apartment, Pope said it doesn't appear as though both died there.

"It looks like the shooting happened in his truck, which was outside," Pope said.

He added that police are still investigating whether the shooting happened in his truck while it was parked in the parking lot, or if it happened elsewhere.

Pope said neighbors reported hearing no gunshots. They were called to the apartment complex only after a neighbor saw the note on the door, telling someone to call 911.

Pope said Larry, 53, had only lived at the apartment for about a month. Pope said that prior to that, Larry and Robin, 50, lived in a house together. He said he was unaware of domestic complaints.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Lenoir Police Department, at 757-2100, or the Caldwell County Crime Stoppers, at 758-8300.

UPDATE: As of May 6, 2009 the wife has died from the gun shot wound. Apparently the husband left a suicide note and in it he was concerned for his wife's poor health.

Flagler County Sheriff's Office is investigating an attempted murder-suicide at a home in Plantation Bay this morning.

Initial reports from the scene indicate that Richard Nickel, 75, shot his wife, Gail, 72 and then turned the gun on himself inside the couple’s home on Kingsley Lane in the development.

Gail Nickel was transported to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, where a hospital spokeswoman said she was in critical but stable condition. Richard Nickel was found dead.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is processing the scene and the investigation of the incident continues.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.

PORTLAND -- One man is dead and his wife injured after an attempted murder suicide in Southeast Portland.

Under overcast skies, more than a dozen investigators gathered outside the home Saturday morning. An hour earlier, detectives say, the woman who lives inside called police and said she had just been shot by her husband. It happened about 9 Saturday morning in the 1100 block of SE 135th.

“Based on things the woman was saying, they felt it was necessary to attempt a rescue of the woman inside the house,” said Detective Mary Wheat of the Portland Police Bureau.

Jolting awake neighbors who live nearby, a countless number of officers raced to the scene. “They were jumping out of the car with their assault rifles and running up the street. I don't know if they knew what was going on when they showed up,” added Greg Fort, a neighbor.

The officers broke down the door and rushed inside. That is where they discovered one man dead and his wife injured. “We believe, at this point, the husband shot the woman, his wife, and then himself,” said Wheat. The woman was taken to a local hospital, but detectives would not say how many times her husband shot her, or where.

“We're not going to comment right now on where she was shot. She is going to survive, which is great news,” added Wheat.

Some neighbors were too shaken to talk about the incident. Others said the couple was very interested in keeping their neighborhood safe. “He and his wife were going to help us put up some security cameras at the neighbor's house where we have some graffiti issues. They seemed like very nice people,” said Fort.

Detectives must now determine why the husband shot his wife before turning the gun on himself.

“[It's] Very sad, and we have to take a look at what was going on as far as domestic violence issues and we'll look at all that and try to make sure we get the victim the help she needs,” added Wheat.

Police were not releasing the names of the victims. They said no one else was inside the home at the time of the shooting.

NEAR GALESBURG, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - New information is emerging about a suspected murder-suicide near Galesburg.

Two people are dead, a man and a teenage girl. Detectives are looking into reports that two teenage girls had been hired by Nicholas Arbutina on Miller Drive to do some cleaning.

The two teens, 16-year-old Tanika Heard, and 15-year-old Brianna Washington, were visiting the home.

67-year-old Nicholas Arbutina is believed to have pulled a gun on the girls, shooting and killing Tanika Heard with a shotgun.

Brianna Washington was also shot, but managed to take off running down the road, going to the gas station complex at Miller and 35^th Street for help.

Newschannel 3 cameras were there to capture the police presence that rushed into the area around 7:00 Wednesday night.

Nicholas Arbutina ultimately shot and killed himself.

Investigators say he lived alone at the home on Miller Drive.

The folks at the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department just released the name of that shooter late Thursday afternoon.

Newschannel 3 also spoke to the father of the 16-year-old girl who was killed. He says his daughter had been working for the shooter for about a year, doing chores at the house.

On Thursday, the father described his daughter as a beautiful, outgoing girl. Tanika Heard had just turned 16. Her 15-year-old foster sister, Brianna Washington, was her best friend.

The pair was at the house on Miller Drive Wednesday evening when the violence started.

Tanika was shot dead in the driveway of the home, and when Brianna took off running, her foster dad says she was shot in the back as she headed for the gas station complex to get help.

Police rushed to the scene, finding Tanika outside the house, along with the shooter.

67-year-old Nicholas Arbutina was a caretaker living in a house next to the main home on the Miller Drive property.

"We're still trying to put it all together," said Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller, "knowing they were familiar with each other, the people at the house had all been there before."

Tanika's father says the teenage girls had been doing chores for Arbutina for about a year. The only witness to the scene is Brianna, who is recovering in the hospital after being shot in the torso.

Tanika's father says Brianna told him that Arbutina tried to sexually assault one of the girls, and when Tanika hit him, he pulled a gun.

Newschannel 3 looked into Arbutina's criminal history, and back in 2004 he pleaded guilty to soliciting a prostitute. Investigators say Arbutina's family lives out of the area.

Investigators say they are looking into the allegations of assault, but have not confirmed anything at this point.

Newschannel 3 has been told that funeral arrangements for Tanika Heard are being handled by Langeland Funeral Homes.

Brianna Washington is currently in the hospital being treated for a one gunshot wound to the torso, she is listed as being in stable condition. Newschannel 3 has been told that she was able to talk to detectives and may be the one with the answers as to what exactly occurred.

LEESBURG, Va. (WUSA) -- Detectives have identified the couple found dead in their Leesburg townhouse early Wednesday morning, leaving their three young children without parents.

A spokesperson for the Leesburg Police Department tells 9NEWS NOW they found the couple in their upstairs bedroom. Inam Uddin, 47, was found dead along with his wife, Nusrat Uddin, 36, died at the hospital.

Police say they received a call from the house at 844 Smartt Lane in the Potomac Crossing subdivision around 4:45 a.m. Police are calling the deaths suspicious but are looking into the possibility this could be a murder suicide. They say they are not looking for any suspects.

Police say the wife ran a daycare in the home, but no daycare children were inside. Parents trying to drop their kids off this morning were turned away by police. Police cannot say whether the home was a licensed daycare at this time.

Police say the couple's children ages 5, 12 and 14 were asleep during the incident and were told about their parents death by child protective services.

9NEWS NOW talked with neighbors who have been on edge with recent crimes in the area. Potomac Crossing is four miles away from Lansdowne, the scene of where William Bennett was beaten to death in March. Police say the incident on Wednesday in Leesburg has no connection to any current investigation going on in the county.

A New Zealand man accused of murdering his wife in Auckland and abandoning his infant daughter in Melbourne has faced court in preparation for his trial.

Nai Yin Xue, 54, is accused of strangling his 27-year-old wife, An An Liu, in Auckland in September 2007 before fleeing to Melbourne and dumping his three-year-old daughter at Southern Cross railway station.

Qian Xun Xue, nicknamed Pumpkin, was found wandering the station alone after her father fled to the United States.

Xue, dressed in a crumpled white shirt and looking thinner than he once was, appeared in Auckland's High Court today to hear discussions on preparations for his case, set down to start in early June.

He listened through an interpreter while crown prosecutor Aaron Perkins told the court evidence would be presented from "a very large number" of witnesses in three countries - New Zealand, Australia and the United States.

Justice Hugh Williams adjourned the case until May 14 to discuss which witnesses would be called and how their evidence would be heard.

Xue was on the run in the United States for more than four months before he was apprehended in February 2008 and returned to New Zealand.

He pleaded not guilty to the murder.

His applications for bail have been denied as the court judged him a serious flight risk.

Pumpkin now lives in China with her grandmother.

A beloved Manhattan lawyer killed his wife and two daughters in a Maryland hotel room and then took his own life in a sickening murder-suicide, cops said Tuesday.

A hotel worker found the bodies of 59-year-old William Parente; his wife, Betty, 58, and daughters - Stephanie, 19, and Catherine, 11 - in their hotel room in Towson on Monday, Baltimore County cops said.

Police refused to disclose the cause of death but noted the victims were not shot or stabbed; they also would not reveal ifthere was a note. It remained unclear what triggered William Parente, a tax and estate planning lawyer, to do the unthinkable.

"The why and the motive in this is just a big blank right now," said Police Cpl. Michael Hill.

Investigators were examining a complaint they received Tuesday from a Queens lawyer about William Parente's financial dealings, said state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

The Parentes' neighbors along their quiet block in tony Garden City, L.I., were stunned by the sudden and violent end to what seemed to be a picture-perfect family. "They loved each other, they loved those girls and the girls loved them," said next-door neighbor Robert Krener, 64, whosaid he was unaware of anystress - financial or otherwise - that William Parente wasunder.

The family also had a home in Westhampton Beach, L.I.

"It's completely incomprehensible," said Krener, who, with his wife, would occasionally dine with the Parentes.

Marianne Quinn, 53, who described herself as Betty Parente's "best friend," said she thought William Parente may have been depressed over his mom's death; the one-year anniversary of her passing was last week.

Most friends said the deeply religious Catholic couple was outgoing and warm - the type of neighbors who brought gifts to new families on the block.

"If you were in a bad mood, they snapped you right out of it," said Catherine Grasman, who runs a kennel in Floral Park, L.I., where the Parentes would bring their two Maltese pooches, Buttons and Cupcake.

"When they came in, they lit up the room."

Police said the family was lastspotted alive Sunday afternoon, not long after they shared what seemed to be a pleasant breakfast together. The Parentes were visiting Stephanie, a sophomore at Baltimore's Loyola College.

The teenager's death left the Catholic campus shaken."She was the last person you would think had anything wrong in her life," said sophomore Pooja Bhatnagar, 19. "I saw her Friday, before she was going to meet with her family, and she was happy. Everything seemed okay."

Betty Parente, a stay-at-home mom who moved with her family from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, to Long Island a dozen years ago, was on the board of the Tri Town Auxiliary of United Cerebral Palsy of Nassau County.

"She loved her daughters with every fiber of her body," said neighbor Linda Mattei.

"This is a shock to everybody."

MIDDLETOWN, Md. (Map, News) - A man who killed his wife, their three young children and himself in their northwest Maryland home had a hard time adjusting to his new manager's job for a railroad and it was causing him stress, according a blog entry his wife posted last month.

The children's grandfather discovered the murder-suicide Saturday when he went to check on the family at their Middletown home, authorities said. Francis Billotti Wood, 33, and her children suffered "traumatic cuts" and each had at least one wound from a .25-caliber handgun, Frederick County Sheriff Charles Jenkins said. Her husband, 34-year-old Christopher Alan Wood, was found at the foot of his bed, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

Francis Wood grew up in the Middletown area and the family moved back last year. Her husband had been transferred from Jacksonville, Fla., for work as an account manager in the sales and marketing group at CSX Corp. in Baltimore, a company spokesman said. In a blog under her name and photo that she appears to have started in 2006, she said she thrived on the excitement that change brings, but he didn't handle it as well as she did.

"Chris is trying to adjust but he is having a hard time with the new job which makes him more of a major player at work," a March 16 entry read.

She also said she knew he worried that his traveling for the job would keep him away from the children too much.

"But I think we should focus on Quality over Quantity," she wrote.

On Sunday, members of Holy Family Catholic Community Church, which Francis Wood's parents helped found, remembered her as someone deeply involved in the parish, teaching catechism and volunteering in the nursery.

The Rev. Kevin Farmer said Wood was "the kind of parishioner I would wish for."

Authorities found the couple's two sons, ages 5 and 4, dead in their beds, and the bodies of their 2-year-old daughter and Francis Wood were in the master bedroom, Frederick County sheriff's office spokeswoman Jennifer Bailey said. On the master bedroom floor was Christopher Wood's body, she said.

Sheriff Jenkins said Wood left behind five notes before fatally shooting himself, including an apology to family members and hints that he suffered from psychiatric problems. The sheriff also said there was evidence that Wood faced financial problems.

Francis Wood wrote in the blog that her husband needed to get out of his comfort zone, but it was causing him stress.

Her last posting, dated April 1, said: "I am thinking that Chris and I will never agree on a new house to buy." She also talks about being blessed to be able to stay at home with her children and that she could give back to the community.

Joe Parker, 64, whose daughter and Francis Wood went to school together and were members of the Girl Scouts, said he wonders if there was more he could have done to prevent the deaths.

"We need to be more involved in other people's lives and we're not," Parker said.

Neighbors placed stuffed animals, balloons and flowers along the porch railing on the Woods' yellow two-story home.

Randel Edwards, 50, placed a handwritten sign that said: "Billotti and Wood families. We love you and hold you in our prayers. Your loved ones are greatly missed. May heaven dry your tears."

Edwards said he hoped some good would come out of the tragedy and lead those who are "experiencing difficulties" to realize "that there are people that want to help."

Next-door neighbor Pat Hendricks said the family moved into the rented house in January and that there were no signs of trouble.

"There were no red flags. They were a very loving family," she said.

GRAHAM, Wash. — A man who fatally shot his five children and killed himself had just discovered his wife was leaving him for another man, authorities said Sunday.

The bodies of James Harrison's children, ages 7 to 16, were found with multiple gunshot wounds Saturday in the family's mobile home, most of them in their beds. Harrison's body had been found earlier in the day with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, behind the wheel of his idling car.

The night before, the father and his eldest daughter went in search of his wife, Angela Harrison. The daughter used a GPS feature in her mother's cell phone to find her with another man at a convenience store in nearby Auburn, said Ed Troyer, spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff.

The woman told her husband she was not coming home, and was leaving him for the man with her at the store. The father and the daughter left, distraught, Troyer said.

Sometime after the children went to sleep, he shot each of them multiple times. Four died in their beds. The fifth was found in the bathroom, surrounded by signs of violent struggle.

"He wanted the kids dead," Troyer said. "It wasn't like he shot a few rounds. He shot several rounds."

Investigators believe he then returned to the area near the convenience store looking for his wife. His body was found near the store, Troyer said.

"We think he was going to go back to kill the wife," Troyer said. "He probably didn't find her and realized the gravity of what he'd done and shot himself."

Several weapons were found in the home.

Authorities have not released the names of the family. Relatives identified the couple as Angela and James Harrison and the children as Maxine, Samantha, Heather, Jamie and James.

Ryan Peden, Maxine's classmate, had said she told him Friday night that her parents had gotten into a fight and her mother had left. The father followed the mother and tried to get her to return, Peden said.

"Maxine texted me at 11 p.m. Friday. She said: "I'm tired of crying. I'm going to bed,"' he said. His text to her the next day went unanswered.

Candy Johnson, an aunt of the mother, described Harrison as a strict, controlling husband and father who didn't allow his wife to make decisions without asking him first.

"My niece has been so controlled from the time she was young," Johnson said, adding that Harrison had impregnated Angela when she was 13.

State child welfare officials put Harrison on a parenting plan in 2007 after a "minor assault" on one of the children, Troyer said, adding that the father agreed to the plan and the case was closed.

Ron Vorak, who lives across the street from the family's trailer at the Deer Run mobile home park, said he called 911 at about 3:20 p.m. Saturday after one of the family's relatives couldn't get anyone to answer the door.

"He knocked on the door, and knocked on a couple of windows," Vorak said of the relative. "He walked around the side of the house, looked into the window. He could see somebody laying on the bed."

The home, about 15 southeast of Tacoma, became a makeshift memorial Sunday as neighbors left cards and bouquets of flowers. School officials said they were arranging to have grief counselors available when teachers and students returned Monday.

"We're going to try to get through this the best we can given the circumstances," said Jeff Davis, Orting School District superintendent. "In a small community like this, we know these kids. Teachers know the kids. All the kids know the kids."

Davis said the eldest, Maxine, was a 10th grader at Orting High School. Jamie was in the eighth grade and her sister Samantha in the sixth grade at Orting Middle School. The two youngest, Heather and James, were second-graders at Orting Primary School.

The father worked as a diesel mechanic, and the mother works at Wal-Mart, said another of Angela Harrison's aunts, Penny Flansburg. Troyer, however, said the father worked as a security guard at a casino.

One neighbor, Sheree Lund, who lives in the mobile home park, signed a community notebook left in front of the family's house. She wrote: "God Bless the five little ones. God bring peace to Mom."

A Washington state man shot and killed his five children, between the ages of seven and 16, then turned the gun on himself after his wife told him she was leaving him.

James Harrison, 34, killed his children early Saturday inside his mobile home in Graham, 100km south of Seattle, then drove to a nearby casino and shot himself inside his car, Pierce County sheriff Paul Pastor told reporters.

Harrison on Friday looked for his missing wife and found her at a convenience store with another man.

The woman said she was leaving Harrison to be with her new boyfriend.

Alerted by neighbours, police Saturday morning found the five children dead, some shot several times, inside the mobile home's bedrooms and one inside the bathroom.

Harrison was found inside his car, the engine still running, with a rifle shot to the head.

Sheriff Pastor described the crime scene on Sunday as a "horrible thing''.

"This was not a tragedy. It was a rotten murder,'' Sheriff Pastor said.

"This appears to be the terrible work of the biological father. If that doesn't break your heart, I don't know what does.''

The murders mark the latest spasm of gun violence in the United States which has been rocked by six fatal mass shootings in the past three weeks, including three police officers killed on Saturday by a 23-year-old man at his home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The Pittsburgh attack came a day after a recently unemployed man stormed an immigrant services centre where he had been learning English in Binghamton, New York and went on a murderous rampage, killing 13 people before taking his own life.

On March 29, a heavily armed gunman shot dead eight people at a North Carolina nursing home, days after six people were killed in an apparent murder-suicide in an upscale neighbourhood in northern California's Silicon Valley.

And on March 10, an unemployed man killed his mother, grandmother and eight others on a vicious shooting rampage in Alabama.

Criminologist Jack Levin, of Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, said there appears to be a link between the failing US economy and a rising body count.

"A mass killer is someone who has almost always suffered a catastrophic loss - that's the link between a recession and mass killings,'' he said, citing the loss of a job, money or a relationship.

"Catastrophic losses serve as inspiration, or precipitant,'' he said.

Shining a light into the murky depths of partner violence

DOMESTIC violence, family violence, violence against women, intimate partner violence: we definitely have a range of phrases for the abuse men inflict on women and children within what ought to be relationships of trust and love.

Pity we don't use them to describe the murders we often see on our front pages — the kids driven into the dam or gassed in the car, the wife or girlfriend stabbed in her kitchen, thrown off a cliff or shot in scrubland. Aberrations? Love gone wrong? No. These instances of violence are just the tip of the iceberg. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is everywhere, even if you don't know it.

It seems the subject of IPV is taboo, so those who experience it assume the abuse is their problem and not the social and public health issue it really is. We need to start talking about IPV and we need to do it now.

I have long known that relationships could be abusive, but it had never occurred to me that IPV was a common experience for so many Australian women. More than a third of Australian women who have had a boyfriend or husband experience abuse. Most shockingly, IPV is the leading contributor to death, disability and illness in women aged between 15 and 44.

Since I began working with women who have experienced abuse, the reality of IPV has become even starker. Rather than numbers on a page, these are real women with faces and histories. Each of them has a unique but common story: of living with control, fear and abuse, and courageously doing all they can to look after themselves and their children who, as IPV witnesses and victims, also suffer devastating effects.

If you are surprised at the extent of IPV, you are not alone. Our awareness of IPV in Australia is very poor. According to a recent Victorian study, many think that women abuse their partners as much as men (false: men are the perpetrators 98 per cent of the time) or that IPV is excusable if it represents a "temporary loss of control", or if the abuser subsequently apologises (false: many IPV incidents, especially murders, are premeditated).

How can we work together to solve a national crisis if a significant portion of the nation is unaware of the crisis in the first place?

In an atmosphere where IPV is shrouded in silence and myth, asking for help involves the risk of being judged or misunderstood. We must aim for a society in which women can ask for help, secure in the knowledge they will be supported and respected.

Being equipped with the information and ability to talk about IPV also allows us to recognise and respond to the signs of abuse in our own relationships and in those of our friends and family.

By transforming our silence — which implicitly accepts and condones IPV — into a loud and clear conversation, we create a society where IPV has few places to hide. We create a society that expresses zero tolerance for violence against women. The reality is that the creation of this type of society is within our capacity.

Often the media contribute to the silence on IPV by failing to discuss it constructively or not discussing it at all. Rather than leaving us at an impasse, this points us to a valuable opportunity. Imagine the possibilities for socially responsible reporting that would arise out of a collaborative relationship between IPV experts, survivors and volunteers and journalists.

The IPV service community should provide journalists with training on IPV issues and support the media's coverage of IPV incidents. It should offer information about IPV, advice on sensitive and educational reporting, and the opportunity for journalists to personalise each story by drawing on the perspectives of IPV survivors.

Media collectives of this type would help smash the silence on intimate partner violence by ensuring that, where it is present in the fabric of society, IPV is also present on the pages of our newspapers.

This is one small idea, one small step, but one that might make us a bit more aware of IPV and with that, a bit more eager to act on a phenomenon that is destroying the hearts and bodies of so many Australian women and children. No idea is a silver bullet: solutions happen when small ideas act in concert. If we take this idea of IPV media collectives, add some national, ongoing, school-based healthy relationships education and opportunities for adults to engage with the issue of IPV in a constructive and personal way, I have great faith that we will be taking our first steps in a society where IPV is taken out of the hiding place that to date has afforded it protection.

16-month-old slammed against wall, murder trial told New 11:58AM Tuesday Mar 17, 2009
A 16-month-old child was shaken violently and slammed against a wall making his head swell like a balloon, a jury was told today at the start of the trial of the man charged with the toddler's murder.
Fiji-born Abhinesh Sharma, 37, a plumber, appeared in the High Court at Auckland today, charged with the murder of Sachin Dhani, who died at Auckland's Starship Hospital on June 21 2007 of head injuries.
The jury, of eight men and four women, heard Sharma plead not guilty to the charge of murder.
Opening the crown case, prosecutor Phil Hamlin told the court the Dhani and Sharma families were close, as the wives were sisters, and both families had moved to New Zealand from Fiji in 2006.
The Dhani family lived in Remuera and had a cleaning business, and the Sharma family often helped with babysitting in the evenings when they were out working.
Mr Hamlin said that on June 19 2007, Sharma was babysitting his nephew Sachin, along with his siblings, a five-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy. Sharma and his wife Dorin also have five-year-old twins.
Mr Hamlin said Sharma became frustrated and angry with Sachin.
"He picked him up and shook him violently. He slammed him against the wall and floor. His body went floppy, and his head became swollen like a balloon. He rapidly lost consciousness, and he never recovered from his fatal injuries," he said.
Mr Hamlin said Sachin died two days later in Starship Hospital.
He told the jury they had to decide whether Sharma intended to kill Sachin when he slammed him against the floor and wall.
Mr Hamlin said Sachin was a happy and healthy child, who was beginning to take a few steps on his own and saying a few words.
Sometime between 7pm and 8.06pm on June 19 2007, Sachin suffered irreversible head injuries.
Sharma made a telephone call at 8.06pm to Mrs Dani to tell her Sachin was unwell, and insisted that she came home.
When Mr and Mrs Dani arrived at Sharma's address in Mt Wellington, they saw Sachin was not responsive or reactive and he was floppy. They all got into the car and headed to Ascot Hospital, the nearest hospital to that address.
On the way to the hospital, they were stopped by the police because of erratic driving. When they explained where they were going, they were taken to the hospital by police car, while Sharma followed behind with the children.
Doctors at Ascot Hospital found a damaged 10cm diameter area at the back of the boy's head.
Sachin was transferred to Starship Hospital where he had surgery to relieve the pressure on his skull.
He was placed on life support, but it was clear there was no brain activity.
"The boy was effectively brain dead and there was nothing more they could do," Mr Hamlin said.
On June 21 2007 his life support was turned off and he died shortly after.
Mr Hamlin said medical professionals who dealt with Sachin said his brain tissue had become very swollen and soft, and his brain had moved considerably because of the swelling.
He said the brain had moved down towards the brain stem, causing coma which eventually lead to death.
Sachin also suffered external haemorrhaging to both retinas, with ruptures to his eye and optic nerve, which showed the force used to cause the damage, Mr Hamlin said.
At the hospital, Sharma suggested the child had fallen off a couch and hit his head on a coffee table.
"All the injuries came within seconds of each other, and would not have been caused by the child falling and hitting his head," Mr Hamlin said.
The jury was shown photographs and were told they would be hearing from 50 witnesses throughout the trial.

And in my view, a jury would find it difficult to place itself in the shoes of a father who at the time was concerned only with the protection of his children.
Some men believe that they cannot protect their children without offending society. But they are wrong in this conception. Society expects fathers and indeed parents and families to protect their children and this can be clearly seen when we take into account that society all too quickly expresses; The welfare of children is the paramount consideration.
In such expression, we can find the true intentions of society and what it expects from the father, the family and society as a whole.
In the event that a man, a father, finding himself in a situation that implicates his children, does society expect such a man to consider first his welfare? The answer is NO; Society expects such a man to "put the welfare of the children first".
No man can claim that he was unable to protect his children because the 'Law' might penalise him. Society expects that man to "Put his children's welfare first" above his own welfare and interests.
The law is based on moral grounds and not on technical grounds. It is not for a man, a father, to first study the law and then decide if and when and what means to use to protect his own children. Every man has the God given knowledge, and facilities to protect his children, and the ability is the embodiment of his conscience.
Where does a man who believes in his children go to be amongst other men who have the same intentions of protecting their children - families - marriage?
Where does a man go to reverse the injustices imposed on him, his children, his Family, his marriage?
Where does a man go to re-unite his Family so that his children may dwell?
Where does a man go to get support to so "protect"?
Where does the buck stop?
WHY BLACK?
What colour do judges and lawyers wear? What other colour would one wear when mourning the loss of a loved one?
WHY THE CAP?
It gets hot standing in the sun in summer and it keeps the head warm in winter! It helps to identify us to each other and the public! Police wear hats don't they? So does the salvation army!They look better than wigs, don't they?
WHY THE FACE COVER?
Section 121 (family law act) prohibits us from identifying ourselves. We would gladly step forward and identify ourselves and the abuse being inflicted on us and our children were it not for corrupt laws being used to hide the abuse of children and families.
WHY "THE BLACK SHIRTS"
Our members needed a name that would stand out. A name that immediately identified us when in the public arena. We think its much better than the names given to loving fathers by other gutless members of the legal fraternity.
In spite of the fact that we live in a Christian democracy, or at least we are led to believe that we live in a Christian democracy, here are two examples on how the Chief Justice and the family court have interpreted the terms:
"Christian Democracy and The Family Unit"
Case 1
A father's application to the family court was to have contact to his two sons. The family court rejected the application even though there were no allegations of any wrong drawing towards his children. The presiding judge noted that the father had great love for his children. The only criteria for the father to comply with was that he first change his attitude towards his wife's partner and companion.
The father could not change his attitude towards the wife's partner and companion as that would be to accept and teach adultery, the breakdown of the family unit and the corruption of the marriage, to his own children. This father was a practicing Catholic. The result was that the father did not have contact with his children for over 10 years. So much for a Christian democracy.
Case 2
A father made application to the family court to enforce existing family court orders for contact with his son. The family court set aside all existing orders and ordered psychiatric assessment for his son and himself. The psychiatrist made recommendations that the father not associate or be a member of an organisation called "the black shirts" this was a pre requisite to supervised telephone calls and one hour of contract.
The father claimed his democratic right to be a member of any organisation he chose. The family court did not allow him to challenge this issue and no proof was provided of any wrong doing by the named organisation. The father's application was dismissed. This father has not seen his son for more than nine months. So much for democracy and freedom of will.
We could list hundreds if not thousands of such cases and those who have tasted the poison of the system know only too well that the above two cases are not only believable but also very true.

The solution;
Reinstate marriage as recognised by law.
The Marriage Act:
Marriage is the union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life.
Reinstate the family as the fundamental group unit of society and most be protected particularly while it is responsible for the care of dependant children.

The first port of call must be to create an inpregnable human shield against any and all intrusions.
It is not the concern of the Black Shirts as to whether a husband and wife live together or not, and nor should it be the concern of anyone else. However, it should and must be the concern of every degent person if the family, marriage and children are corrupted.
Especially by an intruder who would dare to try and replace the mother or the father to the children.
Such a creature must realise that no one can replace the mother or the father and such an attempt will inevitably incur the wrath of the Black Shirts and every decent Australian.

The reason for the Blackshirts
It is ardent belief of the black shirts that the family court and the legal profression have failed the family - the Marriage and the welfare of children and it appears that they (the family court and the legal profession) have no intention to change the status quo.
We also believe that parliament, although desperate to find a solution to this ever growing problem, have lost hope in trying to stem the (so called) breakdown of the marriage which has been and presently is at 200 per day, at 1000 per week and 50,000 per year.
The future, it seems, holds no hope for the marriage, the family, and of course the children.
We are mindful that our children are taking their lives, abusing drugs, suffering abortions at a disturbing level and many of our children are being treated as hostages by their own parents more often than not by the mother.
The above reasons are just some of the reasons why the Black Shirts exist. But even more importantly is the fact that our children are made to suffer the intrusion of strangers into their lives who more often than not are imposed upon the family by their mother.
We say that the "intruder" corrupts the morals of young by mere fact that they are there, because all children are loyal to their mother and their father.
When a (so called) man is imposed into the family home, the children automatically see this as a betrayal to the father and if a (so called) woman is imposed into the family home the children automatically see this as a betrayal to the mother.
We, the Blackshirts say that if we want our children to be morally bound, decent, dignified, honest, loyal, law abiding and responsible.
We the parents must first be all of the above because all children see adults as an example on how to behave.

A man barged into a birthday party in a Cuban neighbourhood of Miami early on Sunday, shot dead his estranged wife and three others, then went home, set his truck and house on fire and killed himself, police said.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene that started when the man showed up uninvited at the party and told about a dozen people there he blamed them for his wife leaving him, said homicide detective Ervens Ford.
Then he opened fire. Some took cover while others, including a pregnant woman, ran into the street.
"It was chaotic," Ford said. "I can't imagine what it was like in there."
The man also killed his 51-year-old wife's mother and daughter and her daughter's boyfriend, whose birthday they were celebrating, Ford said.
Police did not release the victims' names because other family members had not been notified. They said the man and his wife were married about four years and they were not sure when she left him.
Officers got a call shortly after midnight that numerous shots had been fired and a red pickup truck had been spotted leaving the scene.
Juan Sosa, who lives a block away, was out walking his dog early on Sunday when he heard two shots and saw people running toward him, screaming. Then he heard as many as two dozen more shots and ducked behind a large tree to call
police.
"I didn't want to get hit," he said.
Soon after, someone called police to say a building about 5km away was on fire and more shots had been fired. That's where officials found the alleged gunman dead. Ford said the man set fire to both his truck and the building he lived in before shooting himself.
Janseen Almodovar, who lives across the street, rushed outside when he heard people screaming and honking. He said the entire building and a truck out front were in flames.
"We thought the truck was going to blow up," Almodovar said.
Panicked neighbours were not sure if anyone was
inside the one-storey ivory stucco building, but they could not knock because the fire was so intense.
Landlord Abel Loredo, who owns the building where the alleged gunman shot himself, said the man had lived there for five years and had always been on time with the rent for his one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment.
Loredo declined to identify the man but said he had moved from Cuba about a decade ago and seemed very nice. The man was a cook at a restaurant in nearby Little Havana for a time before becoming an electrician a few years ago.
Neighbours said there had never been any problems with police and the man and his wife were often seen in their yard barbecuing. Loredo said the man's wife and her son had lived with him at some point, but he did not know if they were still living there.
Sosa, who lives in the quiet neighbourhood where the family gathering took place, said about 20 people ran into the street after the shots were fired. The last person he saw was a limping man who got into a red pickup truck and sped away without turning his lights on.

In 2005, a worried neighbour made a triple-0 call saying: "He's got a little girl in there about three, and she has been screaming for over half an hour.
"I can't understand what he's doing to the little child, and he keeps screaming 'get up, get up'," the caller continued.
When emergency workers arrived at the blood-stained NSW Central Coast house late on October 29, they found a three-year-old girl dead on the floor. She had been brutally beaten.
As workers tried to revive the infant, her drunk stepfather was berating her nine-year-old sibling, saying: "What did you do to her, what did you do to your sister?"
Despite the stepfather's contention that the older child must have been the culprit, a NSW Supreme Court jury last November found the now 33-year-old guilty of the horrific murder.
On Friday, Acting Justice Jane Mathews jailed him for at least 20 years, setting a maximum term of 26 years.
The victim's injuries were too numerous to quantify and resulted in hundreds of bruises on her body and severe haemorrhaging into her brain.
"... one can barely contemplate the horror she must have experienced when the person who was charged with keeping her from harm and protecting her from violence turned on her and inflicted extreme violence over a sustained period," the judge said.
On the afternoon of October 29, the stepfather had been drinking and after arguing with the mother of the girls, she arranged to stay at a local refuge for the night.
The sisters were alone with him and the oldest was twice sent to a neighbour's to ask for beer and cigarettes for him.
In her evidence, the woman who made the triple-0 call said: "I heard a lot of banging going on, like the walls were being broken and a lot of crockery being thrown around."
The stepfather later went to another neighbour's home, asking for the police and ambulance to be called as his daughter was not breathing.
They found the little girl lying on her back on the kitchen floor, while her older sister was kneeling over her crying.
When told the infant was dead, the stepfather became particularly upset and aggressive, punching the side of the house, and saying to the older girl: "Go on, tell them what you did."
Justice Mathews referred to photos showing considerable damage to walls and doors, and bloodstains in various parts of the house.
The surviving stepdaughter denied any involvement in the killing.
The judge noted the man's relationships had been marked by domestic violence, exacerbated by his use of alcohol and cannabis.
He has continued to assert his innocence of the murder.
"I think it is highly possible that the offender was in such an advanced state of intoxication that he had no precise memory of these events," the judge said.
While he had frequently expressed grief over the death, he had expressed "no remorse whatsoever".

ST. CHARLES COUNTY - The deaths of a married couple found shot in March inside their home was a murder-suicide, authorities said today.

According to the St. Charles County medical examiner's office, Michael Costello, 53, shot his wife, Joyce Costello, 36, before shooting himself March 13 inside their home near St. Peters.

Both had gunshot wounds to their heads, authorities said. Neighbors found the bodies inside the Costello home on Carpenter Drive. They found Michael Costello slumped by the front door and Joyce, lying on the couch, covered up to her neck with a blanket.

St. Charles County Medical Examiner Dr. Mary Case said crime scene evidence supported her conclusion, but she would not elaborate.

Investigators have described their deaths as a case of domestic violence and that no third party was involved.

Michael Costello lost his job with a roof truss company within the past two years, neighbors have said.

Joyce Costello had been in a custody fight with her ex-husband over a teenage child. She was also the subject of several restraining orders by Michael Costello's ex-wife.

Joyce Costello was a 1990 graduate of St. Charles West High School and had worked at a nearby AutoZone.

A man accused of gunning down his one-time girlfriend asked a friend for fresh clothes and a loan of a car after the shooting, a Melbourne court has been told.

Leigh Robinson, 60, of Pearcedale, has been charged with murdering 33-year-old mother of two Tracey Greenbury on April 28 last year.

The court earlier heard Ms Greenbury huddled in fear on a neighbour's doorstep as the accused pointed a gun at her.

Ms Greenbury fell into the Frankston house and crawled along the floor as the door was opened, but died after she was shot by the man in the doorway.

Robinson's committal hearing on Thursday was told he had called his friend of over 20 years, William Paterson, and told him there had been a shooting.

Mr Paterson said Robinson asked to borrow a car and later requested some clothes which he arranged for him.

Mr Paterson said he learned that night Tracey, who he had known as Robinson's girlfriend, had been shot dead.

He said shortly after learning that fact Robinson called him and Mr Paterson told him "she's gone".

"He was just sort of stuttering and hesitating," Mr Paterson said.

Mr Paterson said Robinson and Ms Greenbury had been in a relationship, but it appeared to fall apart about two weeks before the shooting.

He said Mr Robinson had said it was over and appeared upset by the breakup.

The pre-trial hearing in Melbourne Magistrates' Court continues.

THE man believed to have shot dead Frankston mother Tracey Greenbury is a convicted killer who was sentenced to death in 1968 for the brutal stabbing murder of his former girlfriend.

Leigh Robinson, 60, is on the run after allegedly blasting Ms Greenbury to death with a shotgun on Monday as she ran from her house in a desperate attempt to escape him.

Police believe he is still armed and have urged people not to approach him.

As the manhunt widened yesterday, Ms Greenbury's parents spoke of how they had feared for their daughter's safety in the weeks leading to her murder.

Ms Greenbury, 33, who had only begun seeing Robinson in the past few months, told her parents two weeks ago that he had held her hostage in a caravan and held a gun to her head, threatening to kill her.

Max Greenbury said his daughter had tried to end her relationship with Robinson after discovering his criminal history, but was terrified of him.

"She was so frightened and was convinced he was going to come back. She told me, 'Dad, I don't want to die, I am too young'," Mr Greenbury said.

Robinson has a history of crime and violence dating back to the 1960s. He spent 15 years in prison after he stabbed to death 17-year-old Valerie Ethel Dunn in the kitchen of her Chadstone home in June 1968.

Pentridge Prison psychiatrist Alan Bartholomew told a committal hearing later that year that Robinson, then aged 20, was an "odd" character. "He told me he was having dreams that he would assassinate several people," Dr Bartholomew told the court.

Legendary Melbourne criminal barrister Frank Galbally, who represented Robinson at the committal, also told the court: "He dreamed he would kill this girl and has since had dreams of killing someone else."

At Robinson's trial, evidence was given that he stabbed Ms Dunn 16 times with a carving knife after she refused to go out with him. He had also stabbed and wounded a youth who intervened to help Ms Dunn.

On 28 November, 1968, Robinson was sentenced to hang for Ms Dunn's murder, but five months later his sentence was commuted to 30 years in prison, with a minimum of 20.

For this Robinson may owe something to the legacy of Ronald Ryan, who in 1967 became the last man to be hanged in Australia. After a massive public campaign to save Ryan, the death penalty was never used again and was formally abolished in Victoria by the Hamer government in 1975.

Having avoided execution, Robinson served 15 years in Pentridge, where he is believed to have been a quiet prisoner, spending much time lifting weights and participating in drama and debating before his release in 1983.

In 1987, in an interview with The Age, he spoke chillingly of how easy it was to murder someone. "The mention of murder strikes awe into people, regardless of what the circumstances might have been," he said.

"It stirs something in people. People say, 'You mightn't have wanted to, but you've done the ultimate.' But anyone could be in the same situation. It's sometimes only a hair's breadth away.

"Under the terms of our law, murder is a very fine line. It's the one crime that, because of its nature, is so nip and tuck. Armed robbery, you've got to have an intention of some sort. It's the spontaneity."

Robinson, who was then in a de facto relationship with a mother of five, said his time in prison had taught him the value of living a quiet life. "I've been in prison and I've been there for a long time, but that's all past," he said. "I'm not going to make any earth-shattering pronouncements. I'm just going to live an ordinary life. When we're 60, (my partner and I) are going to get married, when all the kids are off our hands."

But despite his stated wish for the "ordinary life", Robinson did not stay out of trouble for too long. In 1991 he was jailed for two years for burglary and handling stolen goods, despite receiving a character reference from television actor Gil Tucker, who played the gormless Constable Roy Baker in Cop Shop.

It is believed Robinson has also done time for rape and was released only five years ago.

Robinson has spent some of his time out of jail working as a truck driver, and until this week was driving for a subcontractor in Pearcedale, about 10 kilometres from where he allegedly shot Ms Greenbury.

At the time he allegedly killed Ms Greenbury, Robinson was living in a caravan on the Pearcedale property of his boss.

When The Age went to the property yesterday, the trucking company owner refused to comment on Robinson, saying only that he would never have suspected he was capable of killing.

Robinson fled the scene of Monday's killing in a silver Holden Commodore, but later switched to a white Mazda utility with a canopy, registration ETM 150. The Commodore was found early yesterday and four associates of Robinson were later questioned by police.

Police have come under fire for refusing to release Robinson's name or description until last night. Inspector Steve Clarke, head of the homicide squad, said police had to balance the public's right to know with the need not to prejudice any future trial.

Ms Greenbury's children, Harley, 13, and Jamie-Lee, 8, returned to their home yesterday for the first time since their mother was murdered.

Comforted by relatives, they removed some personal items, including a teddy bear.

ELEANOR HALL: A Perth social worker has been delving into the emotional area of family murder suicides to try to find out why they happen.

In a new book being launched today, Carolyn Harris Johnson, investigates seven cases in which where a man murders his children and commits suicide after a relationship breakdown.

Ms Johnson says the ultimate act of revenge is often unexpected because the warning signs have been missed.

David Weber reports from Perth that the Chief Judge of the Western Australian Family Court will launch the book this afternoon.

DAVID WEBER: Carolyn Harris Johnson says she found that in all the cases, domestic violence was under-reported. She says any threats to harm a partner or the children need to be taken very seriously.

CAROLYN HARRIS JOHNSON: It certainly was under-reported and minimised where it was reported, even to the point where I was interviewing women, and they'd say initially there was no domestic violence, and then they'd go on to give me accounts of quite horrific examples of stalking, violence and threats.

DAVID WEBER: There were threats before murders were carried out then?

CAROLYN HARRIS JOHNSON: Certainly. There were threats to harm the woman, threats to kill her. Threats to kill the children and also suicidal threats by the perpetrator.

DAVID WEBER: Ms Johnson says the threats to kill or harm came way before the separation occurred. She found that the men believed that the family was theirs to control.

CAROLYN HARRIS JOHNSON: He wasn't going to let her leave and I think the offences have a lot more to do with proprietary attitude of the males towards their families and the need to control them, than it has to do with anything else.

At the same time, when women start to talk to men about their dissatisfaction with a relationship and perhaps try to get the man to go to counselling to address the issues, it's often very hard for women to get men to do that.

DAVID WEBER: The whole thing is about a loss of control really, and this is like the final act of control in a way?

CAROLYN HARRIS JOHNSON: Absolutely. But I think that what we must remember is the incidence of this kind of familicide is actually very low, and even though the cases are shocking, and involve multiple loss of life, thankfully they don't occur too often.

DAVID WEBER: The research suggests that the woman who's been left behind never gets over the trauma. One of the ways that survivors cope is to help others who find themselves in a similar kind of situation.

Carolyn Harris Johnson says there's also a long-term impact on the extended family.

CAROLYN HARRIS JOHNSON: For us as adults, it's very hard to understand what would motivate a parent to kill a child. But for a child it's even harder and I've heard of cases where in the extended family, there's been marital separations and the women in that family have just been quite unable to allow their kids to go and have access to their father, even though that child's father might have been quite loving and never made any threats of any kind.

DAVID WEBER: Do men do this more than women?

CAROLYN HARRIS JOHNSON: Men commit familicide following separation much, much more frequently than women. There's very few cases of that recorded anywhere.

DAVID WEBER: It would seem that Ms Johnson's research dispels two myths about familicide.

One is that familicide is caused by a legal dispute about custody. Ms Johnson found that not all the cases had been to the Family Court, and there was only one where custody was in dispute.

And she found a lack of contact wasn't a causing factor because the men were using their access to the children to kill them.

She believes she's also countered another widely held view.

CAROLYN HARRIS JOHNSON: One of the other myths is that familicide is caused by love, that the extreme love the father feels for the children means that he can't bear to be separated from them, and that somehow he kills them out of that kind of emotional response. But that really doesn't make a lot of sense to me, and the research doesn't really bear that out either.

Societal power structures and some pop culture stereotypes which lead some men to fear appearing weak are often behind intimate spousal abuse, a new study has found.

Clare Murphy of QUT's Faculty of Law has, as part of her PhD research into men's intimate partner abuse and control, interviewed 16 men who have been physically, emotionally, sexually or financially controlling of a live-in female partner and participated in programs to stop abuse.

Her research found many men who had been abusive thought that displaying behaviours such as showing empathy and love meant they would be seen as less masculine by other men.

"Most of the men I interviewed were not keen to experience the lack of acceptance and humiliation that goes along with being low on the masculine hierarchy," said Ms Murphy.

"This then led them to struggle their way up the ladder to gain acceptance from other men.

"Many of the men I interviewed learned at school that to gain acceptance and respect they had to use physical violence, verbal abuse and psychological bullying; teachers and sports coaches often turned a blind eye to these abusive and controlling practices."

She said even men who wanted a loving, non-abusive relationship with a woman may suppress loving and caring practices to avoid being ostracized by other men.

Ms Murphy has spent two years facilitating women's programs at Hamilton Abuse Intervention Project in New Zealand, researching how women coped with psychological abuse.

"I saw a small number of violent men, and began to recognize complexities and contradictions that were not part of popular notions about domestic violence," she said.

"I wanted to investigate these nuances further and I was driven to understand the perspectives of those men who abuse and control their female partners."

She defined spousal abuse as the use of a systematic pattern of wide ranging tactics used to establish and maintain power and control over a female partner.

"Not all perpetrators use physical violence; rather they may use psychological abuse including mind games, degradation and violation of trust," said Ms Murphy.

"They may sexually abuse their partner, control finances, prevent her from working, isolate her from family and friends and prevent her from getting any medical help she might need."

Society tends to depict perpetrators of domestic violence as non-white, poor, young men, according to Ms Murphy, and if a white, middle-class man's violence makes the news, women are often investigated to see how they may have provoked the response.

"Often men who do not fit the stereotypes do not define themselves as perpetrators," said Ms Murphy.

"This decreases the possibility of seeking to change.

"One study cites, for instance, a family court judge colluding with an upper middle class businessman during a custody battle; the businessman then went on to murder his wife."

Ms Murphy said for intimate partner abuse to cease, changes had to occur in individuals and institutions that practise and condone hierarchical power and control regardless of context.

"This includes those who denigrate homosexual men or women, education officials who do not reinforce school bullying policies, legal professionals who do not reinforce laws against elder abuse, TV sports comedy programs that favour misogynistic jokes and companies that record music that supports domestic violence."

Arthur Freeman threw his little girl over the Westgate Bridge in Melbourne seemingly in retaliation against his ex wife and their Family Court dispute. He stopped the car, unbuckled Dacey his 4 year old daughter and in front of her two brother 6 and 2, tossed her over the bridge to land 58 metres down in the Yarra River. She lived a few hours and died later with her mother by her side. He was later charged with murder and the photo above shows him snivelling in the company of police detectives.

Ex-cop who drove wife off pier 'wanted to kill himself'

Cameron Cook wanted to die. And he wanted to make sure his wife would witness it.

So he punched the woman he accused of having an affair, shackled her ankles, taped her mouth and bundled her into the back seat of his car.

After fastening her to a chain he'd secured around the front seat, he set off for Melbourne's Mordialloc pier.

When he got there, he planted his foot on the accelerator and drove off.

Sonia Cook would have died, prosecutors told a court on Friday, had a locked gate not stopped her husband from reaching the deep-water location he'd originally planned to use.

"The car would have sunk," Crown prosecutor Gavin Silbert SC told the Victorian Supreme Court. "We would've had a murder-suicide."

Instead, Cook ended up driving into relatively shallow water off the pier, and Ms Cook, despite her restraints, was able to free herself from the vehicle.

The 42-year-old Cheltenham man has pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of his wife in September 2007 after learning she was having an affair.

Mr Silbert told Friday's pre-sentence hearing that there was no evidence Cook felt any remorse for his actions.

But defence lawyer John Kelly said his client's actions were completely out of character, and Cook had not been coping with the breakdown of his marriage and family life.

He said Cook's aim had been to kill himself and for his wife to witness it.

"What happened on the 7th of September was utterly abhorrent and utterly atypical of him," Mr Kelly said.

"But he didn't know how to cope with what for him was an impending catastrophe.

"He just saw red for a couple of seconds."

In a statement Cook gave to police, which was read in court, he said: "I knew I was fked as soon as I hit her. In that instant I knew I had thrown away my life."

Cook has also pleaded guilty to reckless conduct endangering life and intentionally causing serious injury.

Friday's hearing was adjourned to a date to be fixed.

A MAN charged with the murder of his daughter, whom he allegedly threw off Melbourne's West Gate Bridge, did not appear in court today because he was deemed suicidal.

Arthur Freeman, 36, was expected to appear in the Melbourne Magistrate's Court for a filing hearing, but the court heard he was unfit to be interviewed by police.

Mr Freeman was in an acute psychiatric state and there were concerns he may harm himself, the court heard.

Mr Freeman was arrested outside the Federal Court in Melbourne about 10.30am (AEDT).

A Royal Children's Hospital spokeswoman said Mr Freeman's daughter, named Darcy, died at 1.35pm.

Darcy was pulled from the water by police at about 9.30am after allegedly being thrown 58m from the bridge at 9.10am.

Mr Freeman was arrested after security staff noticed him standing in the foyer with his two sons, aged seven and 23 months.

Police were called and several officers arrested Mr Freeman, who offered no resistance.

Just before he was taken away, he asked security guards to look after his children.
At the time of his arrest, police had no indication Mr Freeman was connected to the West Gate Bridge incident.

Paramedic team manager Trevor Weston said paramedics worked on Darcy for almost an hour.

"Paramedics worked for about 50 minutes at the scene and the child was then conveyed to the Royal Children's Hospital," Mr Weston said.

She was airlifted to the Royal Children's Hospital in a critical condition with massive internal injuries.

Homicide squad Det-Insp Steve Clark said Mr Freeman's sons may have been in the car with him on the bridge.
He said the girl's mother, Peta Freeman, had been informed and was with police.

"She's currently assisting police the best she can in terrible, terrible circumstances," he said.

Det-Insp Clark said a number of witnesses had already come forward and were being interviewed by police.

Bridge security

Victorian Premier John Brumby said it was too early to think about extra security measures on the West Gate Bridge following the girl's death.

"To be honest people probably aren't thinking about those things. They're just thinking, they're feeling for the family and how this could have occurred," he said.

"I think every Victorian, you just shudder, you just think how could that happen and it's just such a terrible thing.

"All Victorians' hearts would go out to the family, to the child ... we just hope and pray."

Ervin Lupoe of Los Angeles, fatally shot his wife, Ana Lupoe, five young children and himself, claiming in a note he faxed to a TV station Tuesday that the couple had just been fired from their hospital jobs and together planned the killings as an escape for the whole family.

"Why leave our children in someone else's hands," Ervin Lupoe wrote in his letter to KABC-TV. The station posted the letter on its Web site later with some parts redacted.

The station called police after receiving the fax, and a police dispatch center also received a call from a man who stated, "I just returned home and my whole family's been shot."

Officers rushed to the home in Wilmington, a small community between the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, about 8:30 a.m. and found the bodies.

All were shot in the head, some multiple times, Coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter said. The killings may have occurred between Monday evening and early Tuesday, based on neighbors' accounts of firecracker sounds, he said. MORE
